Birchbox Road Trip

Last weekend, Birchbox made a pit stop in Atlanta while on its summer Birchbox Road Trip. If you’ve been following my blog for years you know I’m a huge fan of Birchbox and their business model. I had the opportunity a few years ago to take a tour of their office in New York. So it was nice to have the team here in my city. I stopped by the pop up event on Saturday. The lines were long for people waiting to get in so I decided to come back later in the afternoon when it was a little bit cooler. To my luck when I arrived before closing for the day, I was able to walk right through the space.

Birchbox and Birchbox Man were on site selling their favorite products from the online retail shop. Birchbox Women was on one side and Birchbox Man was on the other. Visitors to the popup can build their own Birchbox or shop the full size products from the retail shop. I decided to use my Birchbox points to purchase a few new full-size products. I ended finding a new lipstick color from Jouer Cosmetics and two new nail polishes from Floss Gloss. Because I purchase $40 worth of merchandise the Birchbox team threw in a wishing necklace for free.

Also at the pop-up girls and guys can take advantage of a few of the free beauty treatments Birchbox is offering.

Atlanta is the first stop on the three-city tour. So if you are in Chicago or Los Angeles check out their website to see when Birchbox is coming to you. If you do stop by don’t forget to share you experience on social media using the hashtag #birchboxinmycity.

Behind the Scenes Tour of Earthfare Grocery + A Giveaway

Earthfare at Emory Point

Earth Fare just opened its second location in Atlanta this week in the Emory area. If you aren’t familiar with Earth Fare, they are an organic grocery store that originated out of North Carolina. Since opening in the 1970s in North Carolina they have expanded their locations throughout the southeast. I remember my cousin Jasmine telling me she shopped at Earth Fare while in college at Elon in North Carolina so I was excited to visit this new store. If you know me, you know I try to stick to a organic, all-natural, limited processed foods diet. If it’s straight from the earth or an animal I’ll eat it. Which is perfect Earth Fare’s philosophy is that they ban all products that contain high fructose corn syrup, artificial fats or artificial trans fats, artificial colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, artificial sweeteners, antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones.

The store design is very open and airy and easy to navigate. As you shop around you will notice they carry a lot of locally sourced products. I was surprised to see so many fresh fruits and vegetables that were from the area. They also carry a ton of gluten-free products.

The one thing I think families and busy bees like me will enjoy is their prepared foods section. Their prepared foods section has a pizza bar, a sandwich bar, a sushi bar, a hot bar, and a salad bar. Each day of the week they offer a different $6 dollar special from this area. They also have healthy meal kit boxes for kids that contains one entree item paired with fruit or veggies. Perfect for the busy mom who doesn’t have time to make her kids lunch!

Earthfare also has an extensive wine and beer selection that is hand picked by the staff at the store. They try to carry a lot of local breweries and vineyards as well.

My favorite part of the store was the ravioli refrigerator. They have refrigerator case where you can customize your ravioli for tonight’s dinner. Perfect for a date night. Their selection rotates often and they have pretty unique variety. Since I don’t do dairy I was happy to see they also carry a vegan  ravioli.

I also loved their vast selection of cheeses, they have so many dairy and nondairy options.

A trip to Earth Fare is a bit of a drive from where I live and work but it’s definitely worth a weekend trip.

Giveaway: I’m giving away one $25 gift card to Earth Fare to one lucky Eat.Drink.Shop.Love reader. You must have an Earth Fare in your area to win. Click here to view the nearest location to you. Leave a comment with the city that you live in to enter and fill out the form below.

Modani Furniture Event Recap

A couple of weeks ago I had a great opportunity come across my e-mail to host a party with Modani Furniture. Modani asked me, Egypt Sherrod from HGTV, and interior design firm Benenate Design, LLC. to host their launch event in Atlanta. Over 200 people attended the party at the luxury showroom. Wine was flowing, people were dancing, and the DJ was spinning old and new tunes.

I had never visited a Modani store before and was highly impressed with the chic designer furniture at an affordable price point. I got so many great ideas for my condo. I’m currently in the process of redecorating room by room.

Girls Night Out with Lovable Foods

With busy work schedules and hectic personal lives, it can hard to make time for girl time with friends. About two years, one of my friends and I decided to start a book club/ social club so we could all get together and hang out once a quarter. The reading of books quickly became more of us talking about life and drinking wine the whole time so we decided to make it more social by doing outings once a quarter around Atlanta. Rather it be a bowling night or a dinner at a nice restaurant it was a great way to spend time with old friends and make new ones as well.

For our latest outing we partnered with local Atlanta catering company, Lovable Foods to host a cooking class. Unlike me most of my friends rarely step in the kitchen on a nightly basis, so I thought this would be a great way to show them how to make healthy foods in under 30 minutes.

The theme for our class that evening was caribbean cuisine. Our menu consisted of a curry spiced chicken salad served on a bed of lettuce, a mango jicama salad, two tropical salsas, spiced shrimp with a an avocado dressing, grilled pineapple, coconut bread pudding, grilled flank steak, and dirty rice. The class was very interactive and we all had the opportunity to help prepare each dish. I enjoyed everything but my favorite dishes were the chicken salad, the salsa, the spiced shrimp with avocado dressing. I loved the avocado dressing so much that I make now on a regular basis. It’s so easy and you can a big batch at once and use it throughout the week. It goes great on salads, tacos, and all meats. LovableFoodsMangoSalad

Around Atlanta: Young Blood Boutique

As part of Marriott Hotels’ Travel Brilliantly campaign to reimagine the future of travel, the brand and American Express are joining together to provide travelers with authentic, locally inspired experiences by making over the Greatroom lobby of the Atlanta Marriott Marquis into a pop-up store. The limited time retail experience will provide guests and local residents a flavor of the small businesses that make Atlanta unique, all right there in the hotel.

In partnership with American Express, I was invited to interview Jessie White, co-owner of local boutique and gallery Young Blood Boutique about their business and pop up shop located at Atlanta’s Downtown Marriott.

What ultimately made you want to open the store?

My business partner Rebecca and I took over the shop in 2013 after the previous owners and founders decided to move on to new projects. We’ve have always been huge supporters of independent craft and design and we were eager to jump in and get involved. We’re passionate about what we do and love finding new and exciting work to share.

When someone visits for the first time what can they expect?

We present a curated collection of our favorite independent artists from the around the country. We try to keep the atmosphere fresh and light so that the beautiful work of our artists stands at the forefront. We carry a range of goods from jewelry and art prints to small batch apothecary and objects for home.

How do you decide who you feature in your store?

We spend a lot of time researching to find new artists, but we also get a lot of submissions from artists. We strive to present goods of the highest craftsmanship. We want to make sure our customers are getting high-quality products that they not only love, but will last them forever. We believe quality of a higher caliber should always be one of the benefits of buying independent.

What’s a typical day like for you?

Every day is different. There’s always something new to do in addition to the normal boring business tasks (i.e. accounting!)…we write orders, talk with customers, research new artists…the best days are the ones that are dynamic and usually include good snacks to go along with checking things off our to-do lists.

What do you love most about your job?

I love getting to know our customers and their families. Many of them have been coming to Young Blood for years and we’ve had the opportunity to hear about their weddings, meet their children, or hear about their business ventures or travels. We might be biased, but we think we have a beautiful community here.

Are there any artists you look up to?

I really admire Betsy and Will of Betsy + Iya, from Portland Oregon. We’ve been working with them for years now and it’s been inspiring to watch their journey. They work really hard, but make it look so effortless to have a blast doing what they love.

How has the pop-up shop been going for you all?

It’s been great because it’s given us the opportunity to reach travelers who might not make it down to the shop. We’re excited to be a part of it and hope we can turn new people on to the awesomeness of indie design!
