Cool Conversations with Society Social

Last month one of my favorite bloggers, Roxy from My Cup of Te launched a new brand called Society Social. Society Social is a handcrafted line of colorful bar carts, furniture, and apparel.

The line is to die for and I can’t wait to buy a few of these pieces when I move into my new place later this year. I immediately fell in love with the The Hostess bar cart, The Fifi folding chair, The Dinner Party table, and the Marilyn Sofa!

You can customize each piece to match the colors in your home.

Earlier this week, I had the chance to sit down with Roxy and talk with her about Society Social and all things bubbly!

Check out our conversation below.

Tell me about Society Social

It’s my testament to my belief that life is entirely too short, no matter the risk, to not be doing what you love. The line that includes colorful bar carts to haute hostess attire was inspired by my love for shared celebrations, a good stiff cocktail, and chic entertaining!

Tell me about yourself

I finished grad school at Parsons The New School for Design where I had the pleasure of interning with WWD for fashion week and Donna Karan.   After school, I was immediately accepted into an executive trainee program in fashion buying. I managed a multi-million dollar area and frankly hated the stress and lack of creativity that comes with that kind of financial responsibility.  Hopefully one day Society Social will give me the the chance to manage such a large volume area ;), but it will be different than spinning my wheels for “the man.” Society Social is my baby!

What made you decide to launch Society Social?

I spent two and a half years in corporate America in a fashion buying position where people walked around like lives were being lost and like every day was nearly the end.  To be engulfed in that kind of stress-filled, uninspired environment on a daily basis was not how I wanted to spend my life; it was sickening.  With a firm belief that life is too short to not be doing what you love and a most inspiring example set by my fiercely entrepreneurial parents, I left determined to build the career and life of my dreams. I like to think I’m on my way! Society Social combines my passions- my love for fashion and design with my roots in furniture.

What advice would you offer to future entrepreneurs?

Don’t focus on the success. Focus on the things you love and the rest will come.

After I left my stable, decent paying job, I frantically rushed around trying to figure out what it was that I wanted to do with my life.  It seemed the harder I tried to focus in on that “big idea,” the more it eluded me and being unemployed, pinching pennies didn’t help! When I finally quit worrying about “making something of myself” and started pouring my efforts into getting back in touch with all the things I love (my blog My Cup of Te was a huge part of that) things started to fall into place. Lastly, don’t confuse “fall into place” with hard work 😉

What’s your favorite cocktail?

There are too many to choose a fave! I can say my current tipple of choice is a Hendrick’s Gin with cucumber and a splash of tonic. So perfect and refreshing for summer!

What key ingredients do you always have stocked on your bar?

The basics. Whiskey, Vodka, Gin, and classic accouterments like tonic and maraschino cherries. I do not have a taste for pretentious, 100 ingredient cocktails!

Who do you look up to?

My parents. They are fierce entrepreneurs. I run all my big decisions by them.

How did you get the name Society Social?

I thought a lot about my market. The Y generation is taking longer to settle down and putting off expected adult rites of passage like getting married, having kids, and buying homes.  We’re focusing more on building the career of our dreams, putting ourselves out there, doing the things that we love before it becomes harder to be spontaneous once starting a family.  Also, I just love throwing a good social! Society Social just came naturally!

What’s the best part of your job so far?

The best part so far is receiving pictures from my darling Socials after they’ve styled out one of my designs. It’s such an honor to be welcomed into someone’s home in that way and making people happy is the best! It’s incredibly rewarding!

Where do you go for inspiration?

I love blogs! I don’t have as much time to read them like I used to or write mine for that matter, but a few of my faves are Design*Sponge, Oh Joy, Mrs.Lilien, Little Green Notebook, there are just too many to name!

Do you plan to eventually expand the Society Social brand beyond furniture and apparel?

For sure! I’m always thinking big 🙂 More oh-so-sparkling (literally!) introductions coming this Fall!
